XP locks up constantly since reinstall

P

Pixel Warrior

I wiped my HDD totally and reinstalled XP from scratch. Since this time
there have been constant lockups, up to 6 a day. This involves the cursor
suddenly freezing and the computer being totally unresponsive to any command
except a reset. If I am halfway through saving an image file, on reboot the
file is partially black. It can happen at any time, when I am working or
when the computer is idle. This never happened before my reinstall. So I
don't suspect any hardware failure. The software I am using is essentially
the same as I had before.

Things I have tried:
Event viewer - Nothing shows up, no error messages.
Dr Watson - Ditto.
Got a hardware person in to check hardware installation, he removed some
yellow question marks in device manager.
Ran a little program called PC Doctor On Call - it detected no errors.
Got the latest drivers for my video card from nVidia.
Stopped all of my programs from starting up - except rundll - using
msconfig.

Below is the PrintToFile from my device manager:

System information clipped for brevity.

What's with all the drives? You've got what, about a dozen drives?
Partitions out the wazoo. Have you considered the possibility of viruses,
Trojans or other malware?

P

Pixel Warrior

I have got EZ trust anti-virus, latest definitions, it can't find a virus.
Drives: 2 physical drives, one with 2 and one with 3 partitions, I know I
have too many partitions but it's done now. Plus a CD and DVD.

Be sure to install latest motherboard chipset drivers. Then get latest video
card drivers.

Got all of those updates - Still have the same problem.
Heard that some mobos have a problem capacitor - looked at my mobo, there
was some crud on a capacitor and a tiny swelling - got crud off with small
paintbrush - will keep an eye on it. The problem still keeps occurring;
