XP laptop won't boot - period

I have a Compaq Presario that was fine last night, but
this morning simply won't boot either normally, in safe
mode, or in 'last known good configuration'. It seems
to start ok then hangs on the XP Windows screen, exact
same place, in all three scenarios. All new ideas on how
to possibly get this going are welcome. It's XP Home
Edition. The mouse moves ok on the Window where it
hangs. Other than that, it just stops dead for no
apparent reason. No errors displayed.

Thanks, Ken

If you have a bootable CD or even a Windows 98/ME floppy,
see if the computer will boot.
If you have a Windows XP CD, boot the CD to the recovery
console
see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307654
You will get a command line and can run tests such as chkdsk
and virus scans.

It doesn't give any errors or info, just freezes on
the 'Windows XP screen' that normally appears just before
it shows the list of users to choose from to log in as.
