boot question

Sometimes one of my XP Home PC's won't boot completely. It just hangs on the
black screen with the XP logo. When I reboot, I get to the screen that asks
how to proceed, Safe Mode, Last Known good configuration, etc. or just Start
Windows normally. Choosing Last Known good configuration doesn't always
complete the boot and I'm right back to square one. Start Windows Normally
seems to work every time, so far. My question is what exactly is Start
Windows Normally? Does it mean nothing is unselected with MSCONFIG? I only
have two items unselected and that is Messenger and Quicktime. That can't be
the problem. Thank you, Steve T.

Hi Steve,

To my knowledge, "Start Windows Normally", would start it as though you just
turned the computer on as you would normally. Anything you *de-select* in
MSCONFIG should still be prevented from loading. All other drivers and
functionality should still be there.

In contrast, Safe Mode loads only the very basic drivers (notice how your
screen resolution goes all to hell), and you will lose a fair deal of XP's
capabilities.
