XP Home SP2 install problems

I purchased an old dell lattitude C400 laptop from work. They reformatted
the laptop to a generic Windows 98 (only boots to a dos prompt). I bought
Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 included, not the upgrade release.

After the install gets to the point where it changes from registering things
to saving profiles, my screen changes to BLACK, the CD drive stops turning,
and it looks like I've locked up.

I have retried several times to see if there are any messages on the screen,
but there aren't any. I cant look at any logs to see why things failed.

I've searched dell's website and nothing there says I need new drivers or
downloads.

I've searched Microsoft's websites and can't really find an exact hit on my
problem.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

menu select,install xp,new copy,delete the partition (98),create one,then xp
formats the hd & installs auto.
