XP Home new installation hangs in config wizard

Hello, I have been trying to install Windows XP Home on my laptop. You can
see hardware specs at the following URL:

http://www.premiergent.co.uk/pages/notebooks/ListingDetails.asp?ProductIDCode=PMLSCEN15PCDRWD1G

It is a retail copy, with SP1 preloaded (but not SP2). I do not have any
existing Windows or DOS installations of any version on the computer, but I
do have Linux installed. I am attempting to install it on a 10GB FAT32
partition (formatted by the Windows XP installer), the third primary
partition on the hard disk.
I can boot the CD, and the initial phase of setup worked fine, and the setup
files copy over fine. Then the computer reboots.
It begins installing, and gets as far as installing devices. Then the
configuration dialog appears, with language settings, product key, etc.
This works fine for a while, but after a certain time, independent of
keyboard/mouse activity, it completely freezes up, not responding to keyboard
or mouse. I have retried this a few times, reformatting the partition and
starting again from scratch, just recopying the setup files, or merely
rebooting, in which case it runs a filesystem check and restarts the setup
process.
I have not yet managed to get through even the required parts alone of the
wizard before it hangs, so I can't tell whether it would work then.
If you need any more information about the hardware of the computer, please
ask.
I have tested the installation CD in VMware on Linux, and it works in there.
Any ideas?

Hello? Sorry if I'm being a bit impatient, but it's been a few days now and I
still haven't sorted the problem. I have now also tried it with NTFS instead
of FAT32, but that makes no difference.
Surely this can't be a unique problem? Hasn't anyone got any idea about this?
