hangs on driver.cab when installing xp pro

Hello, I've recently put together a little budget computer and I'm having a
TERRIBLE time trying to install XP Pro on it. I can format and partition the
HD just fine but when it goes to install the setup files it goes to 17%
driver.cab and just hangs.. EVERY TIME. I've swapped out HD's and
installation disks and the same thing happens, I've yet to swap cd-rom drives
though.

The only things plugged in are my Keyboard, Mouse, HD, CD, Floppy, Video
Card, and that's it. However my keyboard and mouse are USB so I don't know if
that makes a difference or not. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thank
you!

My setup:

P4 1.3Gh 400mhz FSB (socket 423)
Intel D850GBAL Mobo
Western Digital WD200 20Gb HD (sn# WMA6Y1183667)
(2) 128MB PC600 RDRAM RIMM ECC Samsung 33L3096
(2) CRIMMs Dell 9578D
ATI Radeon 7000 64Mb DDR AGP
MSI 52X24X52X16 DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
ATX Form Factor 400W

Check your Windows XP CD for fingerprints, smudges or scratches.
If necessary, clean it with a mild household cleaner and a soft cloth.

C'mon, studvivious says "I've swapped out HD's and installation disks and
the same thing happens"
Anyway, the usb devices might be a problem since the usb drivers are not
installed yet. See if enabling legacy usb support in BIOS helps. Otherwise,
get a PS/2 keyboard; you don't need a mouse since you can move around w/ the
Tab, arrow-keys and Enter or Alt-<letter>

I've tried it with just a ps/2 keyboard, different HDs, different CD-rom
drives, and yes, different disks.. all with the same result :( I'll try the
enabling lagacy USB support and see what happens.

I just tried it with the Legacy USB support enabled and disabled and I'm
still getting the same result. :( Any other ideas?

Being a new system, I would check the RAM stick(s). Of course, the RAM must
fit the mobo specs and be installed correctly. If you have 2 sticks of RAM,
and they are identical and correctly paired (ex. A and A1 RAM bays), you can
try using only one stick and see if one of them is not defective.
If you get that right, run Memtest86 (google for it) from floppy or CD - you
don't need an OS for that.
You might need to update BIOS as well.
Hope this helps,
Michael

Well, I upgraded the BIOS and that didn't change anything, so I decided to
run the Memtest86 - but I didn't get very far. I've never ran it before so I
don't know if this is normal but it got to "TEST: 38%" and just froze up. I
let it sit there for a while but it didn't move at all, and none of the
commands at the bottom would work for me either.

So I'm assuming that it's a memory thing. Which stinks because RDRAM isn't
as cheap $$ as I would like it to be, if I need to replace my 2 sticks.

But that is the very last possible thing that I think it could be, opinions?

Mmm,
Memtest should not freeze if memory is good and correctly set up; try to
switch the sticks or install in other bays - if available.
See also what options for memory (voltage, timings - not sure for rdram);
you can go to a shop or bigger computer store and have your sticks checked.
