XP setup can't copy driver.cab

OK, you folks are my last hope.
Win2k box was running fine.
Asus P4S533-X BIOS ver. 1004 (latest)
Very basic box - 1 IDE drive on channel 1 and CD-RW on channel 2
Separate cables.

Decide to buy the "upgrade" to WinXP.
Run the install and it fails at copying 'driver.cab'.
Now, at reboot, "WinXP Setup" & "Windows 2000" are listed but neither work.
Win2k gets half way through splash screen then goes totally black.
Can't even go into 'Safe Mode'.
WinXP goes back into setup and fails at copying 'driver.cab'
Vicious cycle.
Screw it - Restart the setup, blow away the partition and start fresh.
Partition created fine. Formated fine. Fails at copying 'driver.cab'
@#$%!@#$!@#$!@#$!@#$!@#
Reinstalled Win2k fresh = FINE, zero problema.
Reinstalled WinXP fresh with 'Retail Upgrade' cd = Fails at copying
'driver.cab'
Reinstalled WinXP fresh with a friends 'Retail Upgrade' cd = Fails at
copying 'driver.cab'
Reinstalled WinXP fresh with 'Full OEM' cd = Fails at copying 'driver.cab'

Reset BIOS to defaults = Fails at copying 'driver.cab'
Swapped RAM = Fails at copying 'driver.cab'
Swapped HD = Fails at copying 'driver.cab'
Swapped Processor = Fails at copying 'driver.cab'
Swapped HD cable = Fails at copying 'driver.cab'
Swapped CD-RW cable = Fails at copying 'driver.cab'

@#$^@@$%@#$^!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2@#$%@#$%@#@#!!!!!!!!!!!

Will swap CD-RW next - after that, I'm throwing this mobo in trash.
Or maybe I'll just install Linux.
HELP!!!!

Jerry.

Jerry, I just read in another Forum that the problem turned out to be the
Cd-rw Burner. For some reason the CD media
didnt like that particular burner. When it was swapped the Install went
fine.

Holy shit. Can't believe it.
That was it.
Used old 40x CD-ROM and setup went through without a hitch.
This is a 1yr old 52x CD-RW.
Works and burns fine.

Why the hell does this problem show up NO WHERE on the Internet?
Checked the KB = Nada
Google = Ditto
Asus = Zip
Searched TechNet and found nothing.
THREE different ORIGINAL MS CD's all failed.
AAAAARRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!!!
Just another day on planet Microsnot.
Thanks Rich. You must be a search magician.

Hey WM, did you even read my posts?
What, do you work for MS?
Of course, it's never MS's fault.
THREE DIFFERENT ORIGINAL MICROSOFT CD'S.
2 "UPGRADES" AND 1 OEM.
ALL FAIL AT EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT.
Problem with the CD?
No way.
Problem with the CD drive?
Maybe, but it works and burns perfectly.
Never had any problems with it with any other disks.
After finishing the upgrade with the CD-ROM I put the CD-RW back in and it
works fine.
I even burned a disk using XP's built-in burning with no problem.
This is some kind of incompatibility.

I'm having this very same problem right now as well, I've tried both my CD
rom drives and two different MS cds still is unable to copy the files. It
worked once but with trouble and then XP crashed and have been trying to get
it to work for days now. I was thinking of doing the same thing and just
getting linux.
