XP Installation

I am trying to install Windows XP on a Gateway computer. I am using a CD to
install XP Pro. Once the formatting is complete the computer reboots itself
as it is supposed except the computer boots from the CD again which starts
the whole process over. I never can get to the Windows XP setup screen that
is in Part 2 of the installation instructions,
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/install.mspx. I have
tried removing the CD when the computer goes to reboot but then I just get an
error.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

If the CD is not in the computer when the computer reboots, it just keeps
trying to reboot until you put the CD back in. When the CD is in the computer
it tries to begin the setup process (formatting) all over again.

You said earlier:

"I have tried removing the CD when the computer goes to reboot but then
I just get an error."

I was under the impression that maybe you were seeing an error message
on the screen.

After the text mode part of the setup reboot and go in the BIOS and set
the boot/startup order so that it boots to the hard drive before the
CD-ROM drive.

Did you replace or move the hard drive before you tried to install
Windows? How many hard drives do you have in the computer?

No, I did not replace or move the hard drive. I only have one hard drive on
this computer.

I will try to change the start-up order in the BIOS settings to see if that
works.

Thanks for your help!

Hey, did you ever figure it out because I'm having the same problem. It just
keeps looping it self strait through the installation process over and over
again. I never get to part 2 with the language setting and so forth

I think in the BIOS the setting is "Boot from CD only" and if no CD is
inserted the system won't use the harddisc to boot from, thus you get the
error.

Check the BIOS and set it to "1. CD, 2. HDD". If no bootable CD is inserted
it will boot from HDD and if there is no bootable system it will fail. On my
computers i use "1. CD, 2. USB, 3. HDD" and everything is fine.

Let us know if this solved your problem. Thanks

Yes, actually I tried several methods, all of which never worked for me.
I've tried setting the BiOs to boot first CD then HD and so on then
backwards. Even another trick that someone said was to pull the CD out after
xp restarts the computer so that maybe the the normal installation would
continue. Nice try but no cigar on my part.

Sorry I didn't answer your question. I tried the new cd, usb, hd setting in
bios and still no cigar. I've never had this problem before and I don't
really want it to be my achilles heel. Thanks for the help though.

I am still having the same problem. Like you I tried the different Bios
settings but it just keeps going in the same loop. If I can figure it out I
will let you know how I got it to work.
