XP Home Edition - no sound (re-post????????)

I posted this question this weekend but now I can't find it. If I have
double posted, I apoligize.

A couple of weeks ago my sound went away for no particular reason.

I've spent several hours a day for the past week or so reading this forum
and trying the solutions offered. The closest I got was downloading Realtek
ac97 package a3.90. When I tried to install it, it would crank a while and
then jump to a blue screen and tell me that "Windows had encountered a
problem and would shut down to prevent damage to my computer..."

The following info may be of help.

From PC Wizard 2006: Mfg: Trigem Computers, Inc.
Codec: ac97 support - Mfg Analog Devices
Device: AVIVideo

From BeLarc: Intel 82801BA/BAM AC’97 Audio Controller
MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
Standard Game Port

I have no idea what any of that means but it sounds important.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

the card was firmly screwed in place? possibly the cooling fan went out or
got unplugged....
