Xp Home Ed Upgrade and Modem

I updated Windows XP home edition on a Compaq Presario 2292 that previously
used Windows 98. It uses a SuprEx Pro 56k modem. It is not picking up the
modem. At installation Windows told me that it did not recognise this modem.
The modem is manufacturer installed. The Data and Fax modem that XP has
installed is not dialing out. I dont have the driver for the modemon disk
and can't dial out go on internet to get it.

Also, the computer has slowed down considerably. It takes ages for it to
open simple windows.

A computer that was designed for Win98 is probably not ideal to run XP.
Did you check XP's system requirements first? When you read system
requirements you also need to allow for the Marketing Factor and
understand that if you install on a box that only meets the minimum
requirements, XP will run like a dog. You didn't say anything about
your computer's specs. While you certainly can run XP on less, I would
consider the minimum specs in the Real World(tm) to be a processor
running at around 800-1GHz, 256MB of RAM, and a 30GB hard drive. That
machine will be slow, even after turning off all the unnecessary eye
candy.

As for the modem, you will need to find a friend or contact with
Internet access and see if Compaq has provided XP drivers for that
particular modem. If not, then go to the store and buy another modem.

Your machine is inadequite to run XP. You can mitigate this by getting
more RAM. But it won't ever be a "fast" machine. Another thing to
mitigate the situation is to set high performance defaults.

winkey+pause->advanced->performance->visual effects->"adjust for best
performance"

Compaq provides no win2k or XP drivers for that machine.

However, i believe you mean "Supra Express Pro", which can be found
here:

There's quite a list. Unfortunately you'll have to try a couple before
you get the right one...

To narrow it down, don't install the ones that don't have at least
win2k listed. Or external, or USB modems and the ones that dont include
"pro" in the name somewhere.
