Modem activates on boot up

I have a dial-up modem, Conexant SoftV92 Data Fax Modem running on COM3.
Windows XP SP3 fully updated/patched.

Under modem properties I have the "Append to log" setting ticked as I want to see log entries when I
instigate a dial-up session manually. However, I notice that the log contains entries even when I am
not using the modem, almost as if it's performing device checks as soon as I boot up my PC.

In the past I've managed to prevent this, but I've forgotten what I did.
Can anyone offer suggestions please?

Update...

It was the XP Fax service that was running automatically on startup.
Disabled it and made in manual start and now the modem log no longer records these unwanted log
entries.
