XP file search is extremely slow. It takes forever to search for files and
for text within file. I stil have PCs running Win98 and Win98 finds the
files almost instaneously and this is over the network. is there anything I
can do to XP to make it file search faster. Im looking to upgrade the 98 PCs
but this is stopping me. Or is there a software out that can help.

Thanks,

Firenet,

Are you comparing apples to oranges? I say this because, if the search has
to search all the way through the Windows XP system files each time then,
sure, it will take mcuh linger as a Windows XP install is much bigger than
an Windows 98 install. Or you are talking about seaching through the
realtively same amount of material?

If the computer is fast, you might consider enabling the Indexing Service
and/or using Microsoft's new utility from MSN:

Personally, I'm not so keen on the Internet Explorer part of the
implementation, but I like the desktop part and it is blazing fast.

I don't know why your search is slow but you can try using the free
search tool, Agent Ransack. It works well:

Thanks for your reponses. I have super duper XP PCs searching the same
amount of data as the WIN98s. We have about 700 megs of Adobe Illustrator
files that need to pe pulled up right away from a Super Duper Server. So Im
not even searching for the files on the local XP they're on a server and
WIn98 PCs just finds them right away. Actually it is amazing how quick the
files are found. I will try the Search Tool Agent thaht Rock mentioned and
the Indexing that Text mentioned as well. Thanks for your help.
