XP - Fast User Switching - NOT WORKING

S

Stephen

Hi

I've had XP Home for around 3 years, now with SP2.

About 3 months ago, out of the blue, I cannot use
Winlogo + L to switch accounts.

I've determined the reason but I can't find the solution.

The reason is that when I go to;

User Accounts/Change the way a user logs off

The "Use Fast User Switching" box will not save the 'tick'.

It saves the "Use the Welcome screen" tick okay.

I apply options - go back to it and the box is empty.

I'm happy adjusting the registry if someone has the solution.

So that you know - when I use Winlogo + L - a box appears
stating this computer (along with the computer name) is LOCKED.
This box is an XP box - i.e. part of XP.

Thank you in advance - Stephen.

Stephen,

Is the Terminal Services service started? Click Start, Run and type
SERVICES.MSC. Double-click "Terminal Services" and set it's startup type to
Manual. Restart Windows.

Thank you very much Ramesh - that did the trick.

You have no idea how long I have been trying to get

Ramesh,

I have the same issue, and Terminal Service is set to manual. However, when
I try to start the service I get: "Error 1083: The executable program that
this service is configured to run in does not implement the device". I don't
know enough about the executable, svchost.exe, to debug. Any ideas? Fred

Ramesh,

It's David. I have a problem that maybe you can help me as well. I cannot
switch user accounts. I have followed all the usual instructions regarding
administrator and fast user switching. When I log off one user, the computer
takes me to the user window and I select to go to the other user. It fails
to connect and it sends me back to the user window again. Would you know
what the problem is? It used to work before.

David,

Are you able to logon to the other user account after a fresh restart?
Anyway, the event log may give us a clue.

Click Start, Run and type eventvwr.msc
Select "Application" in the left pane
In the right-pane, look for the "Userenv" related entries

Hint: Sort by date and track-down the entry based on what time the error
exactly occurred. Locate and double-click the entry and you'll see more
information in the resulting dialog. Click the copy button at the top and
copy the whole event and paste it to a Notepad document and save it. Post
the information here.

This is what I got from userenv: Windows saved user KIMIKO\ty registry while
an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The
memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be
unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

No, Ramesh. I installed the hive cleanup and restarted and the user
switching mechanism doesn't yet work. I click on logoff and click on the
other user -- it pauses and then defaults back to the old user again. Any
thoughts??

Clear the Event logs, and do a reboot. Try to login to the "problem" user
account, and then back to your account. Now, check the event log to see if
there are any other events registered. Check all the three logs.

Ramesh - You need to know that I can switch users by logging one user off and
then switching to the other user but I cannot switch users leaving
applications on in the other user account.

As you indicated, I cleared the event log on the Applications, shut down the
computer and navigated into the other user account (non-administrator). I
then tried to switch user over to the main account (administrator) and
failed. I got a similar error log:

David,

Have you checked these entries in detail?

Error 2/8/2006 3:30:41 PM disk None 7 N/A KIMIKO
Error 2/8/2006 3:30:38 PM disk None 7 N/A KIMIKO
Error 2/8/2006 3:30:34 PM disk None 7 N/A KIMIKO

View the "Description" about that entries.

And, to determine if the problem is caused by a third-party service /
driver, then use the clean boot method given in the link below:

How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP:

INTRODUCTION
Many issues that you may experience on a Windows XP-based computer occur

David,

Clear the Event logs, and do a reboot. Try to login to the "problem" user
account, and then back to your account. Now, check the event log to see if
there are any other events registered. Check all the three logs.

No, Ramesh. I installed the hive cleanup and restarted and the user
switching mechanism doesn't yet work. I click on logoff and click on the
other user -- it pauses and then defaults back to the old user again. Any
thoughts??

Are you able to logon to the other user account after a fresh restart?

This is what I got from userenv: Windows saved user KIMIKO\ty registry
while
an application or service was still using the registry during log off.
The
memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will
be
unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try
configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService
account.
What do you think?
