Use fast user switching

,I just added another user to my XP Home, SP3 desktop.
I need the fast user switching capability, but the checkmark will not remain
in the window under User Accounts that makes that happen. What will prevent
this from happening? Is it because I have this machine on a home network?

No - in fact your Windows XP Home system has to be a member of some
workgroup - even if that workgroup is a single computer. The choices are
workgroup or domain - but on yours - it's workgroup (WIndows XP Home Edition
cannot be a member of a domain.)

Following these instructions?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279765

You also may want to ensure you are malware free:

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Reboot.

Also - ensure you have the latest motherboard chipset and video device
drivers for your system from the manufacturer(s) web page(s) for each of
those components...

Thanks for offering your help. I did it all, found no infections (I run
McAfee AV, malware scans daily). No help. Any more ideas. It seems it should
be easy to fix, no?

You might trying starting in Safe Mode with the built-in Administrator
account. Ctrl+Alt+Del at logon.
(There should be no password unless you added one. Press Enter only.)

Also, click Start, click Run, type or paste next line and press Enter:
control userpasswords2

Be sure your user account has proper privileges.

You need to note that Fast User switching can also be turned off by
some other software.

How can I find out what software that may be?

It will be quite impossible. Some software will list out the fact
that Fast User switch needs / will be turned off. I have several
"telnet" softwares that states this.

Hi again,

Additional Fast User Switching information:

Fast User Switching cannot be used when Offline Files are enabled.

Do you have a router installed? Lynksys? Sometimes router software changes
things so that you are connected to the network when you are not logged in,
and it can interfere with User Switching. The fix is to turn off that
feature in the router software, if possible, or in some cases uninstall it,
and do a custom install and not choose that feature.

Do a wildcard file search on your system drive for:
*GINA.DLL

You should have "MSGINA.DLL" and "SHGINA.DLL" in your system32 folder.
(GINA = Graphical Identification aNd Authentication)

"The Msgina.dll file interacts with the Winlogon service to provide the
Welcome screen and the Fast User Switching feature. Third-party software can
replace the current Graphical Identification and Authentication data with
their own Graphical Identification and Authentication data. The Fast User
Switching feature and the Microsoft Welcome screen are not available if you
are using a third-party product that replaces the Microsoft Graphical
Identification and Authentication file (Msgina.dll)."
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294739/

If you have "CSgina.dll" see KB article about Cisco Systems:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829715/

If you have Client Service for Netware and the Novell Client, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315347/

If you have "GPgina.dll" see KB article about DigitalPersona:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885194/

Google search for site:support.microsoft.com fast user switching
http://www.google.com/search?&q=+site:support.microsoft.com+fast+user+switching

HTH. (Hope This Helps. :)
