Fast user Switching no longer works

Am running XP Home Edition SP2. The fast user switching facility no
longer works. Have tried enabling it in User Accounts but it won't
enable. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Peter,

Fast User Switching facility is available if the following conditions are
true:

1. Welcome Screen is enabled.
2. The system is not connected to a Domain
3. You're not using a custom logon screen.
4. Terminal Services is started and running. (Check in Services.msc)

My fast user switching did work under XP Preffesional SP2 until I installed
some XP updates. My Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching are both checked.
But now when I select Switch User I go to the Welcome screen, but can't get
beyond it by selecting another user. If I actually Logg-off, rather than
Switch it works.

Fast User Switching and Terminal Services are both set as "Automatic". I
don't believe I'm connected to a Domain. I wasn't before and didn't do
anything...how would I check?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Allen,

Does the Event Log reveal any clue?

How do I view the error messages registered in Event Log?:
http://www.winxptutor.com/eventlog.htm

Also check the SYSTEM log for any logon events.

Thanks. The Terminal Services had been disabled. Re-enabling it
restored the fast user switching.

I logged in then tried to switch user (it didn't work), I returned to the
original login and looked at the vent log. No errors or warnings; nothing
under system either.

If I go back a couple days, there is a red error message:

"Windows saved user D5LCSP61\Thomas registry while an application or service
was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account."

NOTE: Thomas is the name of a user account on my system. It is not new, it
works now and worked previously w/fast switching.

Any ideas?

Allen, The userenv error you've mentioned is normal. However, I don't have
any idea why FUS fails to work. Will post back if I find any answer.

Thanks.

On 6/10/06 I installed three XP Updates (KB904942, KB909993, and KB896344).
On MS Update it says I can uniinstall each of these using the Control Panel,
Add/Remove software, but I don't see them listed. I thought one of these may
be the cuplrit. Any idea how I would uninstall them?

Did you put a check mark in "Show Updates"?

Duh! No, I missed that! Thanks, Tom. I haven't tried the uninstalls yet to
see if that fixes my problem. I'll post the results.

Thanks again!
