xp & browser problem

S

I am sure these are related:
1. On Start/Help & Support I get disk activity, but no window or error.
I tried the -reguser trick but no good.
2. I can browse most web sites but cannot get to Windows Support or
Update either directly or through the microsoft web site links. Just
sits on a blank window.
3. Some links (external?) at some sites don't work... for example, on
my webmail site the Delete button the Compose button and the Check mail
button don't do anything, except press the button and depress me!
This also applies to some links on sites that are accessed by their
program and not through IE.
This all happened after I "cleaned" malware, including stopping
processes that start on log in..... I've since restarted these. I did
small edits on the registry as instucted by the Symantec web site to
solve an antivirus program problem. I have since returned to a
previous system backup setting.
