XP and 98 networking

Ken

I'm trying to set up a home networking system. I have an
XP machine and a Windows 98SE machine. I'm using NIC
cards, CAT5 cables and a switch.
I used the network wizard on the XP machine and followed
the instructions. At first I could see the 98 machine from
the XP machine but not the XP machine from the 98 machine.
After playing around I can't see the the 98 machine from
my XP machine any more.
The lights on the switch appear to indicate communications
(at least from both machines to the switch).
Does any body out there have (had) the same problem?
Thanks,

Have you got the built-in firewall on the XP machine
disabled? That could be the reason you cannot see XP.

This is a common problem, with many possible causes. Start by
googling this NG for some of the dozens of reports of this problem,
and for the dozen (or so) things to check.

Ken,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

And, if you find the time, please report here in the newsgroup
whether this solved the problem or not.
