Internet Connection Sharing AND networking?

O

Owen Mortensen

I have a windows XP Pro machine that is connected to the Internet through
dial-up. I have Internet Connection Sharing working such that I can connect
to the Internet from a Windows 98SE computer through the XP Pro computer's
dial-up connection. Now, I need to be able to share folders from the XP
machine so the 98 machine can see them and the reverse. I've run the Network
setup wizard several times, but still cannot see either the XP machine from
the 98 machine OR the 98 machine from the XP machine.

Anyone know how to make this work?

Thanks,
Owen

Thanks. I'll give that a try when I get home this afternoon.

Note that from the link given, you may wish to consider the following:

XP doesn't give you the option of netbeui as standard (you can install it as
an additional option from the XP disk)

ICS will not work if you use static IP addresses on the client machines and
will allocate a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 to the host machine.

The most relevant part of the article is setting up a user/password on the
XP machine the same as that used on the windows 98 machine.

Hmmm. Will the networking work without Netbeui installed? Or do I have to
install Netbeui on both machines and then tell it to allow Netbeui over TCP?

Yes it will work without Netbeui installed. If I recall correctly, windows
98 used to use it by default but MS have stopped supporting it now and you
should use TCP/IP instead. You can add TCP/IP as a protocol to the W98
computer.

Did not work. Still have the same problem: I can get to the Internet through
the XP computer from the 98 computer, but I can't see the XP computer from
the 98 computer nor the reverse.

I cannot disable the firewall for just the LAN connection. If I disable the
firewall on the LAN, the firewall is also disabled on the dial-up connection
to the Internet (I don't want to do that! The log shows just about constant
port probes from various ip addresses)....

Ideas,

Owen,

If you have all correct protocols and transports on all computers, check for a
browser (no, I'm not discussing Internet Explorer) problem. This is a normal
situation with Windows 98 and Windows XP on the same LAN.

Half way there! Once I disabled the browser on the 98 machine, I could find
it from the XP Pro machine. However, I still can't see the XP Pro machine
from the 98 machine....

Anyone?

Can you see the XP Pro computer from itself? Does it have shares setup?

Did you restart both computers, after disabling the browser on the 98 computer?
Do you have any personal firewalls, or antivirus products?

hmmm yes, I have McAfee Internet Firewall and McAfee Virus Scan running on
the XP Pro machine (as well as the Windows XP firewall). Tried turning off
the XP firewall briefly, but that didn't help. I'll see if I can configure
the firewalls to allow all traffic from the 98 computer....
