I did a search of the last 1000 messages but my ISP deletes old posts every
month evidentially; nothing recent is available. I'm sure the question has
been asked many times so it's old news. But I would appreciate any help you
can give. A power surge fried my motherboard and the computer (300MHz) is
too old to rebuild. I want to build a new computer and use the existing XP
Home disc I purchased and isn't being used anywhere else. Is this possible
with Microsoft's activation routine?

Hi, Ron.

Sure. Just use the Product Key on the CD-ROM case. If it's an upgrade CD,
you'll have to "show it" your Win98 or other qualifying CD-ROM when it asks.
If it has been more than 120 days since you last installed it on your old
computer, activation over the Internet should happen automatically.
Otherwise, you may need to call the toll-free number it will give you and
explain; shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

For details on WPA, see: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/

In addition to the answers to your specific problem, try setting your news
reader to msnews.mircorsoft.com as accessing these newsgroups via the
Microsoft server vice your ISP.

Was the number of post exactly equal to 1000? If it was then it is the
settings of your newsreader that is limiting you to only a 1000 posts,
not your ISPs news server.

Go to "Tools" on the menu bar of OE6, then selection "Options...," then
go to the "Read" tab, and under the "News" heading, uncheck the box in
front "Get 1000 headers at a time," then you should be able to download
all the posts store on your ISPs news server.

Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Yes, provided it is a retail CD, as opposed to an OEM CD, purchased with
an item of hardware (which are only licensed to the original machine).
Just go ahead and install. When it comes to activation, if it is more
than 120 days since you last did, it will go through on the net like the
first time. If not, you will have to phone a toll-free number that
will be given, to explain and swap one long number for another to check
back as you type it in
