power surge!!

Hi there, recently there was abit of a surge....and my bar did not work( old
bar), now it loads up to a screen asking to start in " safe mode" "last known
good configuration"( any of the options there do not work....now i have asked
microsoft if i was able to download windows xp on a new computer( got my
disc...product key...an written instructions from other computer), i was told
to un-install from other computer but unable to anything with it

atm using old comp with win98 on it.

What happens when you select the item "Start Windows normally" from
those list of options ???

a screen opens up with options to start windows in safe mode....last known
configuration...any of the options i try do not work....and unable to
uninstall my windows xp from that computer as i was aked to do b4 installing
my windows xp on this computer ( which has win98 on it)

If the installation on the other computer is unusable, then I don't
think there is an issue with the legality of just going ahead and
installing XP on your Win98 computer.

Why can't you re-install over the damaged installation on the first PC?

You can not legally download Windows XP at all, on any computer.

if the power surge
was the result of a
fluctuation with your
electricity,

then perhaps you will
need to run a check disk
on your file system.

what might have occurred
is that if your system was
in the middle of a read/write,

then there are files that were
left opened because the read/
write was interrupted by the
power fluctuation.
