I am rebuilding a five-year old Dell computer with Windows XP Pro on it. I
have a Dell CD to reinstall windows, but I have lost my 1000-digit security
code for Windows. How can I obtain this code from within the system before I
rebuild?? Thanks, guys.

Excepting the code used by Dell to setup the PC will probably not be the one
required by the recovery cd
(They used a universal code to image the sys)

That won't work, IF you need the code that came with the PC it should be
in a sticker on the case.

It's 26 characters, and you may not need it. Otherwise, it's on the back
of the system, on the COA. And you can get it with various utilities like
Belarc.

If you are reinstalling using a Dell XP Pro CD, you will not need to input a
Product Key.

I suppose you mean the key...
The fine manual says that when you get to the place where you enter the key,
select the box which says "Not at this time".
That is what I did when I rebuilt this computer.

As your system was registered by Dell with an OEM, the time to enter the key
after a rebuild will never come.
