XP/98 ptp and Westell DSL router

We have 2 pcs, one with 98 and one with XP Pro, both connected to a Westell
327w router. I want to get them back to where we can have a shared folder on
the XP box and also share the printer connected to the same XP box.

Whenever I run the network wizard on the XP box I get scared off when we
get to the warning about file and printer sharing not being secure due to how
we're set up.

Is there a certain protocol or client to use? Can I use/install a different
firewall configuration?

TIA

How is the Westell 327w configured? Are you selecting the right
connection method in the Wizard?

When configured as a NAT router on a private LAN, the Westell 327w
acts as an Internet gateway, so the right option is "This computer
connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or through
another computer on my network."

I went through the wizard again and selected the residential gateway option.

Still no luck.

Both computers see a network but only themselves. Have TCP/IP , CLient for
Microsoft Networking, file and printer sharing on both. The XP box has QoS
Packet Scheduling (don't know what that is guess the wizard does that?

WHen I look at the router it 'sees' both of them (the names show up on
various pages). I changed the Domain name on the DNSconfig page to our
workgroup name - it was myhome.westell.com.

TIA

If there's a firewall program (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, PC-cillin,
etc) on either computer, make sure that it's configured to allow
access on the local area network. Note that some antivirus programs,
like Norton Antivirus 2005 and PC-cillin, contain firewall components.

If the router has a firewall function, make sure that it's configured
to allow access on the local area network.

What is the IP address assigned to each computer?

Try pinging each computer from itself and the other by IP address and
by name. For example, if the computer names are A and B, and their IP
addresses are 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3, type these commands at the
command prompt on each computer. Each command should receive four
replies:

ping A
ping B
ping 192.168.0.2
ping 192.168.0.3
