No Internet Connection w/ Router

G

Guest

I'm using Windows XP Pro and Verizon DSL. I was using the Verizon provided
Westell 327W modem/router and it worked OK but I had to recycle the rounter
often - very often. So I decided to switch back to the Westell Model 2200
modem and use a Linksys wrt54gs for the LAN.

Using the modem and one desktop only, internet connection is fine. When I
add the router (just one desktop wired connection for now) the router
connection seems to be fine but I can't get the internet connection. I have
followed the procedure of shutting everthing down and restarted in the
prescribed order (so, so many times...). Obviously I am doing something wrong.

I'm set to obtain IP address automatically and upon request from the linksys
set up wizard provided dsl.verizon.net as the domain and MyDeskTop (ie,the
name of my desktop computer) as the host name.

please help.

Don't be misled by the 'myhome.westell.com' Domain - that was just the
latest of my many attempts. Thanks for taking a look!

Your Version supplied 'router" may have had your DSL user name/
password pre-programmed into it. You need to to the same the Linksys
router. Check with the mannals (paer or from the Linksys web site)
and check how to access the router's internal configuration pages.

BTW: DNS addresses are not 192.168.1.1 for Version service. Check
qith their Tech Support line.

Also, in my prior reply I cleverly sent the ipconfig in my current mode
(modem, no router gets me to the internet!) and not the one with the router
in place. I don't think that the difference is material but for the record,
the correct ipconfig is:

I will follow on the info from smlunatick this evening (gotta go to work!) -
the ping result seems to support it.

If you receive Destination net unreachable message, you have a routing issue
or the router doesn't know to route. These search results may help.

In your original post, you said:
I was using the Verizon provided
Westell 327W modem/router and it worked OK but I had to recycle the rounter
often - very often. So I decided to switch back to the Westell Model 2200
modem and use a Linksys wrt54gs for the LAN.

Unfortunately for that idea, the Westell 2200 ALSO is a modem/router --
which is indicated by the IP address of 192.168.1.47 that you said was
for the configuration with just the "modem." When you put the WRT54GS
in the mix, you got an IP of 192.168.1.1 from the Linksys. Both of
these IPs are from a local DHCP server and not from your ISP.

If you want to use the Linksys you will either need to configure the
Westell 2200 as a bridge or configure the Linksys to be used as an
access point only.

Solution: both lem and smlunatic were right - I needed to configure the 2200
as a bridge and in the course of that realized that I actually needed a ppoe
connect to the internet via the linksys - w/ username/pw provided.

Now I just need to bring in the rest of the network devices...for another day.

thanks so much for your help.

Glad you got it working. Descriptions of these devices often are quite
misleading, and the fact that many -- like the Westell 2200 -- have only
a single Ethernet jack makes it easy to think of them as modems only.
