Network connection

I have 2 desktops hard wired to a netgear 802.11b router and 1 laptop
connected via wireless connection. All have Windows xp home and are in a
workgroup. The router is connected to a Westell wirespeed modem via DSL to
Verizon. In this configuration, everything works, I can view folders and
files in other PCs and can connect to the internet.

I would like to upgrade to a 802.11g wireless router. In attempting to do
this (and following the documentation for the router) I am no longer able to
connect to the internet. I have tried to renew and release the IP address.
I have also eliminated the router all together and had one PC hardwired
directly to the modem, unplugged the modem, the PC and rebooted everything as
well as released and renewed the IP address. I still have no connection with
the IP address on the PC showing as 164.254.x.y.

I talked to Verizon tech support and they've told me there is no problem
with the modem or their connection as I can access the Internet using the old
router and configuration. The router vendor points to the ISP as I cannot
access the Internet if my PC is connected directly with the modem. Could
there possibly be a problem with having an existing workgroup and home
network upgrading to a new router?

The old router used the gateway 192.168.0.1 with the PCs getting their IP
address dynamically. The new router wants to use the gateway 192.168.1.1.

Any help anyone can provide is appreciated.

Log into your new router and change the gateway from 192.168.1.1 to
192.168.0.1. It works for your old router, so do the same with your new
router. The Westel modem probably uses 192.168.1.1 as its own gateway,
which would cause a conflict between modem and router both using the
same gateway ip.
To log in to the router, hard wire it to one of the pcs, open your web
browser and type in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and press enter.

Thanks for the response. I tried this but still no luck connecting to the
internet. I was able to change the router IP address to 192.168.0.1.
Released and renewed the IP address. Verified that the PC I used to do this
got an IP address of 192.168.0.100 with the gateway having an address of
192.168.0.1. Any other suggestions?
