xls files that will not open

Having downloaded several large xls files I find my Excel will not open
them. Is it because I have only version 7.0a? Do I need to upgrade or can
I do something about it?

I have only version 7.0a?

Your version use a other file format then Excel 97-2003

You can ask if they want to save it as Excel 95 and send it to you
if it is possible with the workbooks
