.xls files being auto-opened as Word documents.

Does anyone know how to re-establish the capability of
prior versions of my windows operating systems to detect
the appropriate Office product for opening a file?
Windows XP, at least as installed on my computer, opens
my .xls files as word documents ... very irritating when
someone has emailed an Excel document as an attachment.
 
In windows expolorer, locate the directory of the .xls
fiel you wish to open. Click on it once, then right
click, select Open With and select Excel or select Choose
Program and find Excel in that list. Check the box
saying "Always use this type of program to open these
file types".
 
I think anonymous's suggestion will work for the .xls files. But I'd do this to
get everything back to "normal".

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults
