X-P startup and shutdown

I'm using a dell dimension 8200 windows XP pro. Computer takes an awful long
time to shut down. When I go to restart it always goes to the "windows shut
down improperly how would you like to start" screen. I've tried every option
with no luck, so, I just start as normal. It takes forever to load and goes
through the same deal every time I shut down. I looked at msconfig and
nothing out of the ordinary is loading. I've ran several registry repair
programs...no luck. I've ran a full system virus scan...no luck. This
problem started when my wife tried to load up AOL instant messenger (we don't
not use AOL for our internet). Other than the above, the computer runs
great. No performance problems or anything. Once it's finally loaded it,
it's fine. Please help!

Thanks.
