Wrong Modver in IE6?

P

Peter Pepper

I recently "upgraded" one WinMe user from IE5.50 to IE6sp1 using Windows
Update. Ugh.

Install would not overwrite several files, and they remain as version 5.50
files, virtually preventing IE6 from running. I have tried several methods
of replacing, renaming, deleting these files, to no avail.

When I tried to repair from Add/Remove, this is what I got:

"Internet Explorer cannot be repaired due to the following errors:
Version 5.504134.100 of file ACTPRXY.DLL exists, but the version needs to be
greater than 6.0.2800.1100"
ditto this for
BROWSEUI.DLL,
MLANG.DLL,
MSHTML.DLL,
SHDOCLC.DLL,
SHDOVVW.DLL,
SHLWAPI.DLL,
URLMOON.DLL,
WININET.DLL,
WEBCHECK.DLL, and

MSIDLE.DLL (needs to be greater than 5.50.4522.1800)"

Ran full virus scan, spybot, and adaware.
Tried renaming uninstall file and reinstall - nothing.
Tried to REGSVR these files-nothing.
Tried copying these files from another machine with same setup-windows
hangs-nothing.
Tried renaming the files so new files would be created and tried the install
again - could not rename because e they are "in use by windows" - nothing.
Tried to uninstall IE6 and reinstall with a clean download (in safe mode
with no AV running) - on restart, Windows Cannot upgrade %1 from %2. I read
the knowledgebase article on this issue, but the solutions - seven steps
give me a break - why I spent half a day doing this is beyond me - Did not
work ( boy am I surprised!!).

What else can I do?

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Crossposted to WinME General newsgroup.

1. Was the anti-virus application running when you installed IE6?

2. How did you "uninstall" IE6?

3. Had user ever tried installing IE6 before with similar results and then
tried to fix it by reinstalling Windows ME?

I have a sneaking suspicion that this error is caused by attempting to
install a version of IE intended for WinXP, rather than Win9x.

Can the OP comment??

1. AV app. was not running on reinstall. It may have been running first
time around.
2. Uninstalled using add/remove programs, reverted to previous version -
ie5.5
3. Have not had this much trouble before. On other users with problems, I
was able to use the repair tool successfully. Will not work this time.

I suppose that is possible, but the IE6sp1 recommended file came from
Windows Update. Does someone have link to Me version full download? I will
download on another seat and copy over to problem seat.
