Multiple IE6 Problems

Guest

Hi

I appear to have 3 seperate problems using IE6 SP1

a. Cannot downlaod programs from the microsoft site
b. Cannot start real player from IE6
c. When I first use IE6 I get the error message 'Cannot find server' however
when I click the home button the page displays correctly

All of these problems seem to have appeared over the last couple of weeks. I
do not recall changing any settings. All security settings are set to low to
medium or medium.

On the advanced tab under the options menu I have restored to default. I
have changed the privacy to allow all session cookies and to overide cookie
handling.

I have tried to repair IE6 but cannot find IE6 in the add/remove program as
suggested by Microsoft. I have also tried to to download IE6 from the
microsoft site but it appears to do nothing when I try and download so cannot
download a new program to re install IE6.

Have you tried out to reinstall IE with this article by MS?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/EN-US/
How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer

You can remove IE, but need to go to "Add/Remove Windows Components", then
uncheck IE.
But, you will have this message, when you try to install a new one:
"Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed
on this system. Setup cannot continue. "
See article:

Good luck,

One query I have before I attempt anything is that I cannot see IE in the
add/remove window. Any ideas? When I tried to add/remove with windows
components element of of add/remove it did not seem to do anything.

If you are using XP, you probably will not see IE in Add/Remove as it
cannot be removed in most cases.

The option in Add/Remove/Windows Components is exactly what it says,
i.e. "Adds or removes access to Internet Explorer from the Start menu
and Desktop". It does not remove IE.

Neil,
you should be able to click on the checkbox of "internet explorer", once you
are in the "Windows components wizard", and IE is the 4th component of the
list, just after "Indexing Service".

I am using XP SP2.
