ie6 broken

I

info

Hi

ie6 was working ok - then it didn't for no apparent reason.

If I load up ie6, nothing loads and the busy (hourglass) icon just
keeps going. If I then click the "stop" button on the toolbar, my
default page address is displayed in the toolbar an the "action
cancelled - please press refresh" display shows up in the main window.
I cannot do anything from here - nothing happens.
The only way I can get ie6 to work is to open up WINDOWS explorer, type
a www address into the address bar and hit return. Windows explorer
then obviously turns into Internet Explorer and everything is ok.
I can also surf locations on my hard drive in ie6 if I put the local
address into the address bar and hit return.

Firefox works fine, as does Netscape.

I have tried disabling my firewall, I have no adware or spyware on my
sytem (I have checked) and have tried repairing ie6 by doing a repair
install of Windows (XP), I have tried regsvr32 various files (suggested
elsewhere). I have tried fixing winsockand have tried right-clicking
ie.inf to re-install.

I have spent ages trawling through numerous posts and have tried
everything suggested. Does any genius out there have a solution. It
would be really appreciated.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/26.html

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

info

Hi Frank, thanks for the response.

I have tried most of them before, but none of them address the problem
I have;
ie6 does work for me if I first go through Windows explorer (and carry
on using Windows explorer). It seems as if ie6 itself does not want to
go online (although it is).
