Wrong Icons for DVD drives

Can anyone shed any light on my problem please. When I go into My Computer
the icon for the hard drives and DVDs are all generic so that I am unable to
see at a glance which is the DVD drives. I have been into Device Manager and
the DVD drives (2) are correctly identified. I have checked as suggested by
some in the registry for Drive Icons but this does not exist.
I am running XP Pro with all the updates. My video card is Nvidia but I do
not thinkl that has any bearing on the problem

Try this fix from kelly-korner.

I used a Magic Marker to write the drive letter on the face of the drive.

Also check this link... it seems that you can "restore" the default drive
Icon. By default no "DriveIcons" key is supposed to be under Explorer, so
delete it if you find it... that should restore de default CD-Rom icon in My
Computer/Explorer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ explorer

Hi Ronaldo.
Thank you for your reply. I tried the first suggestion but there is no
Driveicons in the registry, the second suggestion looks promising but I will
wait until my son comes in before I tackle adding keys to the registry.
Whilst I am 80% on the electronics/mechanical side i am only about 40% on the
software side. One of the suggestions by nass has resulted in one of the two
DVD icons having returned although some times it reverts to generic icon. In
one of the documents it refers to this problem after a malaware or virus
attack. This recenlty happened to me but was sorted out by the technical
people at Kaspersky. I will let you know the result of the registry
alteration when my son has done the alteration.

Try this command:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need the XP CD installation media for
this process.

Hi Kelly.
Sorry for the delay in answering but I was rushed into hospital and have
only now resumed normal life.
Basically I tried all your suggestions but stll no joy!!. It's proving a
tough one i am now thinking that a reinstall is the only answer.

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shell32
I have a similar problem, my empty DVD drive ( f: ) icon has changed to the Win default one, here's the screenshot. If I insert the CD/DVD, the icon is then OK (default or custom if there's an autorun.inf specification).

If I hold down the F5 (refresh) key, I can see a corrent icon for a very short time but it's like to be overrided with the default icon (as for the file without extension).

There was a problem with other two desktop icons (shortcuts) but it was very easy to repair them, deleting+creating new shortcut repaired the 1st one and selecting Hide extensions for the known file types restored the other one. However, the DVD drive icon is still the problem. Registering shell32 didn't work.

Deleting iconcache.db didn't work (the file was just recreated).

During trying to restore the corrupt icon, I had to resolve this bug as described on M$oft support pages.

Drives k: and l: are virtual drives - the f: drive icon should be the same as for the virtual ones but without the DVD on it.
