Help: PC Not seeing DVD in player

Searcher7

I've been experiencing a problem that has been getting progressively
worse.

I've been playing DVD movies on my pc, and started to have an issue
with the DVD disk not being seen when inserted into the DVD drive.

In "My Computer" the DVD player can be seen as "CD-RW Drive (D:).

But when I insert a DVD the label does not change to show what is in
the drive.

I use VLC Media Player, because it is the only media player that I have
found that will play DVDs, but I'm sure it is not the problem. I need
to find a way to get my system to see the DVD when it is in the drive.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

They have what seems like sometimes a short life span. If possible try
another drive in the pc or try the drive in another pc and see if can
isolate the problem. I have them regularily give up the ghost. Bought two
new burners since spring alone (separate pcs)

For a hardware test, you can try this.

http://majorgeeks.com/Nero_InfoTool_d120.html

1) Remove media from the tray.
2) Start InfoTool and bring it to the foreground.
3) Verify the drive is detectable. Look in the "Drive" tab,
to see if the hardware properties of the drive are detected.
If it is a DVD drive, you'd expect DVD boxes to be ticked.
4) Flip to the "Disc" tab in Nero. Right now it should be
blank. Insert a CD. Verify, that within the next 30 seconds,
the salient details of the media, have been printed in the "Disc"
window.

Type: Audio CD

5) Now, eject that media. The display should go back to blank info again.
Insert a DVD. Verify, hat within the next 30 seconds, you can see
the details of your DVD.

Type: DVD Video (DVD+R DL)

That would prove your drive can read at two different
laser wavelengths, but doesn't prove whether it can write or not.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD

"DVD uses 650 nm wavelength laser diode light as opposed to 780 nm for CD."

If you cannot do that much, it could be a hardware problem with
the drive. If both of those tests work, it could be a
software issue. Upperfilter/lowerfilter registry entry,
usage of known "bad" CD/DVD tools, some kind of ASPI issue
and so on.

I have no problems playing DVDs in either Media Player Home Cinema or
Windows Media Player 11.

I find that 'My Computer' often does not see tracks on discs in the disc
drive. Often though, Windows Media Player can see them, and once browsed to
there, they then show up on the main file system too. Don't know why.
