WordPad and Notepad opens doccuments in weird "code"

I have many doccuments in WordPad and Notepad, but when I now try to open
them, all I see is a lot of funny symbols. What happened to my files??? :-(
 
Can you please be more specific concerning "Funny Symbols"? There are some
reasons for this but it would help if you could cut and paste a small amount
of the "Funny Symbols".
