Notepad problem...

Two days ago, I went to open a document I had saved using Notepad. It opened
in Wordpad as a .txt file. I then went about changing the default, thinking
that somehow the default had been reset. Notepad was not in my Recommended
Programs list or in my Other Programs list. So I browsed for Notepad. I
found it and selected it and my document still opened in Wordpad. I have
tried opening other Notepad files only to find that the problem is a
system-wide issue. I tried to use HP Instant Support but I was disgusted at
the level of incompetancy I found there. My "helper" told me to open Notepad
and that should re-install the program so that I could open .txt files in
Notepad. Now, I know I don't have a computer degree but a program cannot
re-install itself in such a manner. And I know that re-saving the documents
in Notepad did not work (they still opened in Wordpad). Can anyone help me?

Comp Info: Windows XP, Office XP + Frontpage, Notepad version 5.1.2600.2180,
2.50 GHz Intel 4, 512 MB RAM, Compaq Presario.

Alternative:

EditPad Lite is an excellent Notepad replacement.
It's a lightweight text editor, but certainly not as basic
as the standard Notepad that comes with Windows.

I've had the same problem. I'm not missing my original version of Notepad,
it just doesn't show up in the "Open with..." dialog, nor does it appear in
the list of helpe applications. Just in case, I did overwrite the original
(in the C:\Windows folder), with this one, but it hasn't changed anything.
Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I found notepad using start/run/notepad.

But it still won't open simple docs or the readme files. How do I set
it up for that? It's not even in my accessory folder. How do I put
in my accessory folder? F'n XP home!

usiing notepad you can only open .txt, ini files which are proper text
files
any scripted files like .doc or .rtf will not open proper in notepad

I found out that notepad was spelled wrong in the folder, updated
that. Not sure how that happened since it was pre-loaded wins, but ah
well.
