I recently backed up my hard drive reformated and installed XP home SP2. Some
of the files I'm trying to view were created in win2k WordPad. Is There a way
I can view these these files?

The funny thing is, i can open a txt file created in win2k but not an rtf!

The way you describe your issue....
'I recently backed up my hard drive reformated and installed XP home'

Then the wording you used...
'access denied error message'

Points me to this being a possible solution for those files:

How to Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP

Read *carefully* - do not just skim the page and start following steps.
There is important information there dependent on the version of Windows XP
you have.
