Word Word with multiple docs shuts down

When I have multiple word documents open at once, and they appear in the task bar, when I click on one, then go back to it after clicking on another (or some order like that), Word shuts down and I have to deal with the "auto recovery" stuff.

This started after a long happy relationship with Word 2000. I reinstalled he program, but the problem persists.

Help?
