What's wrong with Wordpad?
* Comes with Windows
* Microsoft Word comapatible (save files in RTF format)
* Essential features only so is nowhere near as intimidating as Word

Abi Word from Abisource is a good solution, has spell checker unlike some
other simple free word processors. Can export to Word and read Word
format.
