Word not replacing highlighted text

How do I get Word to replace text that I've highlighted and overkeyed?
Usually that works for me, but today when I highlight text and try to overkey
to replace it, the cursor jumps to the beginning of the highlighted section
and adds what I key to the beginning of the selection. Is there a function
key or shortcut that I've toggled inadvertantly? If so, how do I toggle it
back?
