Word 2003 Jumps to end of line when highlighting

Basically, when I highlight something in word and press the backspace key, it
just jumps to the beginning of the highlighted text. Similaly, if I highlight
something and press a letter on the keyboard it jumps to the beginning of the
highlighted text and puts the letter in.

Anyone know if there is a setting somewhere?

Select Tools > Options > Edit tab and turn on "Typing replaces selection".
