Word won't replace and delete highlighted text - any thoughts why

I recently got a new laptop, and Word is acting a bit strange. When I
highlight text that needs to be replaced and start typing something new, it
starts typing but keeps the highlighted text after it. Normally, the
highlighted text is deleted and replaced with whatever I type or paste. Is
there a setting that I need to change? Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks

Yes, it's a setting, and how you get to it depends on which version of Word
you have.

In Word 2007, go to Office button > Word Options > Advanced and check the
box for "Typing replaces selection".

In Word 2003 and earlier, go to Tools > Options > Edit and check the same
box.
