can't replace highlighted text by just typing or pressing backspac

Normally when I make a mistake I highlight it and start typing. This replaces
the highlighted material with what I was typing. Now it just inserts what I
was typing without replacing it all. On top of this backspace only deletes
one character. The only way to remove all of the highlighted material is to
hit delete.

I checked the insert key and this is not the problem. Does anyone have a
suggestion?

In Tools > Options > Edit, check the box for "Typing replaces selection". (In
Word 2007, the box is in Office Button > Word Options > Advanced > Editing
options.)
