why won't backspace delete highlighted words (only del key can)?

my computer at work allows me to highlight material with the mouse, and
delete it by hitting either the 'del' or 'backspace' key, but my computer at
home only allows the 'del' key to; does anyone know how to turn on the
backspace key to delete highlight material in word? thanks, Douglas

Try this:
Select Tools > Options > Edit tab and turn on “Typing replaces selectionâ€.
