Highlighting then backspacing to delete does not work on Word.

When I highlight my work and try using the backspace key the highlighted
material is not deleted. But if I use the delete button it works. My
backspace button always worked then it suddenly stopped. This only happens on
Word though so should I try resetting my Word settings or use defualt?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit tab | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
