Changing text by highlighting

I used to be able to highlight a word in MS Word 2003, then start typing to
replace it. However, for some unknown reason, today I am unable to do so. I
highlight a word (or phrase) and start typing - instead of replacing what
I've highlighted, it inserts the word I am typing IN FRONT OF the highlighted
text and leaves the text I have highlighted.

This is not the OVR feature - I do no want to set my document to Overtype.
Is there some other Word setting that was changed without me knowing about
it? All the documentation I have read says that I can highlight the word and
start typing to replace it, but that isn't true in my case.

Any help would be very appreciated

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit tab | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
