Cannot write over highlighted words. NOT OVERWRITE

I'm not sure what happened, but I can no longer highlight a word with my
mouse and type over it. It begins to write what I'm typing, but pushes the
highlighted word to the right, instead of writing over it. I've tried the
OVR, and it's not that. Please help.

While in Word, hit the Insert key once.

Tools > Options > Edit > check "Typing replaces selection". In Word 2007,
this is in to Office button > Word Options > Advanced.
