Highlight and delete (backspace button nog longer works)

I'm not sure how to explain this properly, but I used to be able to highlight
something in Word and just by writing something else replace it entirely.
For instance, I would take a paragraph, highlight it, and then as soon as I
would start writing something else this paragraph was automatically deleted
and replaced by the new writing.

Now what happens is, I highlight something and I have to first delete it
using the Delete button (Backspace no longer works) before I can replace it
with something else.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

In Word 2003 or earlier, Tools > Options > Edit > check "Typing replaces
selection".

In Word 2007, the same option is at Office button > Word Options > Advanced.
