highlighting to type over text is not working

All of a sudden when I highlight text and begin typing in order to replace
the highlighted text, it does not replace the highlighted portion, but
inserts the new text next to the old text. How do I get it back to replacing
the text when I highlight a portion that I want replaced.

Tools > Options > Edit > check "Typing replaces selection". (In Word
2007, this is the first option in Office Button > Word Options >
Advanced.)
