word format

Looking for the best way to format a document in word with text and blank
areas where text can be typed above an underline (i.e. First Name:
_____________). When I do this with the formatting in word it moves the line
(i.e. First Name: ____Joe_____). Is there an easy way to change a multipage
document that I have to a format that will allow me to type over the
underline areas in order to fill out the word document?

The secret is to make a table - in this case, with 6 columns - and 1 row. In
the first cell, put First Name. Leave the second cell blank. The third cell
is MI. Leave the fourth cell blank. The fifth cell is Last Name, and leave
the sixth cell blank. By adjusting the borders of the table - only the
bottom of the second, fourth and sixth cells have a line, you won't get the
movement. Be sure to make enough room for the first and last names, and
shorten the MI block. You can copy and paste the table into other pages.

Another alternative is to include a field similar to fields in the Microsoft
Fax templates.

Enter name of the field from menu Insert then field in field names select
macro button in display text enter something like [click here to enter first
name] then select OK.

Unless you really need the underline to remain, you can use MacroButton
NoMacro fields (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/UsingMacroButton.htm) with a row of
underline characters use as the "prompt" text. Whatever is typed in the
field then replaces the underline. But if you need to retain the underline,
see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/LinesInForms.htm. As Carole says,
table borders are the easiest way to get underlines in a form that is set up
on a grid (as opposed to running text such as a contract). This is true even
in a protected form, which may be what you want to use; see the forms
tutorials by Dian Chapman that the aforementioned article links to.
