Word fails after XP SP2 installed on Dell Inspiron

After installing Windows XP SP2 on my Dell Inspiron 8600, I can no longer
open Word 2002. I have gotten all the updates for Office XP Professional, and
for Windows XP.

Word does not open, not even with the support template in safe mode.
However, I have no problems with Excel, Outlook, Visio, or Powerpoint.

I get the following pop-up error message:

"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to Close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience"

The error signature is: "AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 10.0.6612.0 ModName:
unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 834e74c9"

Any help would be appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem on several Dell Optiplex GX260 and GX270
machines. I hope it's not an issue with Dells.

Have you tried deleting the file "normal.dot"?
