Word and Memory usage

Using Word2003 on XP Pro(SP1) ~1GB memory

I'm working on a large Word document (500 to 800 pages) to eventually be
moved to Excel and then a large third party database. I need to clean up the
Word documents to make the transition. The documents are straight text,
nothing fancy (no graphics, headers, tables, nothing) and in Properies show
file size as 3.5 MB.

Every 10 to 15 minutes my cursor seems to disappear. I've loaded Task
Manager to see how the memory is being used at coincident with the cursor
disappearance the memory usage jumps to 100%. Though the cursor comes back in
<3 seconds the slow down last for 2-3 minutes.

I have no other applications running. Since the Word file maximum is 32MB
(the file is ~10% of this) and I have 1GB of RAM (also plenty of HD space) I
would think I have plenty of room to run and make my document changes.

What is slowing down my system and what can I change to make it perform
better?

Thanks,
philr

Could this be AutoRecover? Possibly in connection with "Allow background saves"
not being activated? Tools/Options/Save.

Thank you Cindy.

I had previously tried that option and moved up the autorecover time to 60
minutes but the memory usage still jumps to 100% every 10-15 minutes holds
there for about 2 minutes and after going back to 10-30% (for Winword.exe)
then I can use my cursor normally.

Other suggestions?

thanks,

I actually turned off autorecover for this project and I still have the
missing cursor problem. Watching the Windows Task Manager box in my task bar
shows an immediate slow down when it jumps to 100% (all green) about every 10
minutes for 4-5 minutes duration.

thanks again,

Mmm, then something else is running...

If you start Word in Safe Mode (hold down ctrl when starting it), do you still
see the same? How about starting Windows in Safe Mode?
